Curls don’t have to be wild and Bohemian—now, the look is more contained. Here’s how to do it.

1. Get a cut that’s layered around the face and rounded (rather than blunt or razored) at the ends.

2. Shampoo only once a week, with a moisturizing formula. On the other days, if you must, rub small dots of shampoo into just your scalp and hairline, and rinse.

3. Condition several times a week (even if you don’t shampoo), avoiding the roots, with a rich, hydrating formula that contains panthenol or natural oils.

4. Once a week, after shampooing, massage a deep conditioner through your hair (skipping roots) and cover it with a shower cap while you shave your legs— the steam will help the ingredients penetrate. Then rinse thoroughly: Residue can make curls crunchy.

5. If your hair is shoulder-length or longer, create a polished version of the air-dried look by spritzing roots with a heat-protecting spray, then blow-drying only the crown of your hair with a round brush. Rub a dime- size drop of styling lotion between your hands and rake them through the length of your hair, then let that part air-dry. (If it’s especially cold out, use a diffuser.)

6. If your hair is short, mix a quarter-size dab each of styling cream and gel in your palms, then rub them through damp curls and let hair air-dry.
