I took a good look inside my dishwasher recently and realized it was begging for its own cleanup—yes, keeping the machine in tip-top shape requires care at least once a year beyond self-washing. I took out the upper and lower racks, then used wadded paper towels to wipe out the bottom and the drain area (located beneath the spray tower on most models).

Congealed food and other yuck were trapped in the filter’s strainer—on previous occasions, I’ve found broken glass and even a missing spoon. Next, I filled the washer bottom with a gallon of vinegar (I use white or apple, whichever is cheapest at the grocery store) and let it sit for an hour to help soften stubborn scum.

We have hard water here in San Antonio, so there was a slight calcium buildup (that white crusty-looking stuff) on the interior surfaces, which I removed with a vinegar-dampened sponge. Finally. I ran the washer on a short no-detergent, no-dry, energy-saver cycle. When the appliance was cool,I grabbed a plastic scrubber and rubbed off any buildup left on the walls, drain, and spray arms.
